For plants an estimation of the percentage cover is made, using the guides on the quadrats to assist in estimation. These are then recorded as a percentage cover for each group of plants.

For convenience most algae are grouped according to colour to avoid problems in identification.

Recording data

In this way the distribution and abundance of species along the shore can be determined.

Graphical manipulation of results will illustrate any zonation pattern present. Suggestions which account for the patterns observed can be used to assist in understanding the concepts of adaptation and interactions within communities.
